CLEAN FATIGUE:
There will be no weight requirement for this event but all competitors must carry a small bag containing essential clothing items and food and water. This event id designed for fell runners, mountain goats and anyone who doesn't fancy carrying a house on their back. While load bearing isn't for everyone we would like you to remember that the essential element that makes 'Old Faithful' the challenge that it is comes from carrying a heavy load over arduous mountain terrain. If you are unsure if you can manage the full load and are more inclined to undertake the clean fatigue challenge, consider carrying as much weight as you feel you are able to manage so you get a good taste of what training for 'Selection' is all about. This is a challenge within yourself rather than think about the competition.
CHECKS AND PROTOCOL:
Please note that there will be a load weigh in at registration and also weight checks at random points throughout the course. Failure to meet the weight requirements at any point results in immediate disqualification and a ban on competing in all our future events. This policy is based on integrity and a respect for the route and all the other participants.
The days of carrying paint numbered bricks are long gone. Make sure you load is made up of useful items like emergency rations, waterproofs, spare clothes, a sleeping bag and anything else you would usually carry for a day out on the mountains.
Allow extra weight for the food and water you will require on the march to ensure your load is always at or above the minimum weight requirements.
Rendez-vous/checkpoint procedure is as follows; your race number will be recorded by the Directing Staff manning the checkpoint and you will only be able ton continue upon his say so. Failure to pass through all the checkpoints results in a non-completion of march status. The RV points also serve as an opportunity for the DS to assess your physical condition and suitability to continue. Answer his questions and please obey any commands issued.
When approaching the RV please from an orderly line and limit talking with other participants, this is to ensure the DS accurately records all names/numbers for safety reasons and also allows him to carry out his job more quickly so that there is minimum delay in setting you off again.
CLOTHING:
Civilian or military dress can be worn and all load competitors should wear boots. Trainers / fell running shoes are not best suited for load-bearing exercises on this terrain.Your kit and footwear will be checked by our safety officers, if it does not pass you will have half an hour to put it right. Clean fatigue runners can wear trail shoes but not normal running trainers
RETIREMENTS:
You can only retire at the roadside locations. If you need to do this, advise the Directing Staff at the checkpoint that you wish to retire and hand him your race number. You will be transported back to the start point by official transport as soon as is practical. Administrate yourself, put on warm kit and consume good food and a warm drink. NOTE: transport is insured for racers/participants only and 'Old Faithful' organizers cannot be held responsible for the movement or safety of any spectators who wish to follow the event.
EMERGENCIES, ACCIDENTS OR SERIOUS DANGER ON THE ROUTE:
Contact race control on one of the numbers that our will be provided with prior to race day. Give them details of the emergency, the exact map reference if possible, the injured competitor's name and race number. Please act as instructed and always help a fellow runner. Remember completing the march is far more virtuous than winning it. Mobiles and GPS devices are permitted but may only be used in emergencies. The local Mountain Rescue Service respond to emergencies.
