The organisers are local to Shropshire and over the years have put in thousands of hours and miles into exploring the roads , tracks and strade bianche of one of the most stunningly beautiful natural landscapes the UK has to offer. With such an intimate knowledge of the area matched with unrivaled levels of creativity and riding experience, we have sought to bring our riders a truly incredible and challenging range of courses that no other cycling sportive can get close to. Both of our Slaughterhouse routes will take you down some of the hardest Belgian classic-esque roads imaginable and up some of the most challenging and brilliant climbs to be found anywhere in the land. Our routes twist and turn up moss covered and dead-fall strewn forgotten back roads, taking you into a wilderness of almost ghostly eeriness as you pass though miles of ink black forests, secret villages and across a stunning rolling landscape of greens just as reminiscent of Tolkien’s Shire as of any Belgian Spring Classic.
For our King of the Mountains competition we have taken great care to select a variety of awesome categorized climbs, ranging from the shockingly steep and seemingly endless to twisting inclines that allow you to stay in the saddle until the final sprint for the line. We’ll have a line judge and professional event photography at the summit ready to allocate KOM points and to snap the decisive action moments. The photographer will stay put to make sure he captures the endeavors of all our muddied riders suffering their way to the top.
Our sprint zones have been subjected to even more care and attention than our climbs. Some are pan flat but most are undulating. Real sprint ability, staying power, tactical acumen, risk and guts will be required to score on the Green Jersey points competition. Go too early or leave yourself too isolated for too long and just when you think you’re closing in one last undulation will sap your legs and break your spirit and the pack will catch you on the final flat and leave you for dead before the line. Like the KOM classification, the finish line will have a line judge to allocate and record the points and a photographer to catch the decisive action moments.
Both KOM and Green Jersey zones will be directed by a motorcycle outrider for you safety. The centre line rule will be strictly enforced to make sure nobody pulls off a reckless attack or exploits oncoming traffic to their advantage and puts themselves and the chasers at risk.
For those of you out of the points there is no reason why you shouldn't race it out with the pack you’re riding in and keep a tally of your points.
Both 105km and 170+ km rides have fully equipped feed stations and support, fully way-marked routes that take you through some of the very best British countryside and gpx file downloads for your GPS.
Please note that we are keeping the course route and profile a secret for the time being. Registered participants only will be sent digital copies of the data in due course. For more information on Avalanche Endurance Events and how the Slaughterhouse came into being please visit the About page.
